FibroScan®: Non-Invasive Liver Assessment
FibroScan® is a quick, painless, and noninvasive test used to measure liver stiffness, which helps doctors determine the amount of scarring (fibrosis) in the liver. It works similarly to an ultrasound and provides an alternative to a traditional liver biopsy, without surgery or needles.
Using a technology called transient elastography, FibroScan® sends a small pulse of energy through the liver. The device measures how quickly the wave travels through the liver tissue. Stiffer liver tissue can indicate a higher level of scarring.
Indications for FibroScan in Endocrinology practice
-
Screening in high-risk populations: Identify patients with T2D, obesity, or metabolic syndrome who may benefit from early intervention and referral
-
Risk stratification of Metabolic Dysfunction–Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Metabolic Dysfunction–Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH): Assess liver fibrosis severity in patients with or at risk of MAFLD/MASH, particularly when FIB-4 is indeterminate or high.
-
Monitoring disease progression: Track fibrosis progression in patients with established MAFLD/MASH over time.
-
Evaluation of treatment response: Assess response to lifestyle interventions, pharmacologic therapies, or bariatric surgery in patients with MAFLD/MASH.
How to Prepare
Preparation is minimal.
-
Avoid eating or drinking for 2–3 hours before the exam.
-
Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the right side of your abdomen.
What to Expect During the Procedure
A FibroScan® is performed as a quick outpatient test and usually takes about 10 minutes.
During the exam:
-
You will lie comfortably on your back.
-
Your right upper abdomen will be exposed.
-
A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to the skin.
-
A probe (similar to an ultrasound probe) will be placed on the skin over the liver.
-
You may feel a light vibration or tapping sensation as the probe sends waves through the liver to measure stiffness.
-
No sedation is required, and you can drive yourself to and from the appointment.
After the Test
There is no recovery time after a FibroScan®.
-
You can return to normal activities immediately.
-
Results are usually available right away and may be discussed with your provider during your visit.
Safety and Risks
FibroScan® is considered very safe.
-
It is noninvasive (nothing enters the body).
-
It does not break the skin.
-
There are no known complications or significant risks.
Benefits of FibroScan®
-
Accurate evaluation of liver stiffness
-
Noninvasive alternative to liver biopsy
-
Quick and painless test
-
No recovery time required
-
Immediate results
Summary
FibroScan® is an effective and convenient way to assess liver health and detect fibrosis without invasive procedures. Combined with your medical history, lab results, and imaging studies, FibroScan® helps your healthcare provider determine the best plan for managing and treating liver disease.
